Statutory Functions
The Commission is responsible for licensing and regulating the operation, deployment, use or management of all forms of renewable energy in the island of Alderney and its territorial waters. The commercial focus at present is on the exploitation of the island’s tidal resource.
The Commission's licensing process involves a comprehensive examination of an applicant’s technical and financial proposal. The Commission is responsible for ensuring that any development
- is not a danger to human life,
- is not detrimental to the environment, and
- does not interfere with fishing, shipping and other lawful activities.
The Commission’s consents process is robust, transparent and straightforward. It is a two stage process, phase 1 being the grant of a Master Licence to conduct preparatory survey, tidal measurements and other investigations over a concession covering a number of blocks, and phase 2 being the individual Operating Consent to develop each block within that concession. The phase 2 Operating Consent will require applicants to obtain all necessary licenses and permits from relevant statutory consultees. The Commission will guide applicants through this process.
